Post by Stevenokc1988 » Thu Sep 05, 2019 7:50 am

I'm making the leap from all electric to nitro. Two extremely generous members hooked me up with two nitro planes. What fuel do you reccomend ? What mix%? Where are you buying it from?thanks for the help guys!

Steven,
In the past I've used Morgan's Cool Power and Byron's Fuel, I'm not saying that they were better than any others but I had good luck with either and they were both readily available. On the Cool Power I was using a 15% Nitro and 17% Synthetic, I think the Byron's was a similar mixture. I'm also getting ready to buy some but the current prices are just crazy :o

In the past you could get a gallon in the low $20 range but now it looks to be over $40?? Has anybody else been talking to the hobby shops about this? What's going on?

They were carrying it at Mikes Models but Mike retired in June (good for him) and closed the store. I think you can get it from HobbyTown in Edmond in quart bottles only. As you can see from Kelsey's previous post he has seen the same crazy prices for nitro.....I hope it's a temporary thing :(

Note: Tower also carries Cool Power and others as well.

I did some checking on nitro fuel. Wow!!! , the prices are out of site. :( The best I could find was Torco RC Fuel Air 15% at $39.29 and free shipping on Ebay or Walmart. Torco is a big maker of all kinds of racing fuels. Might be worth a try. I just opened a gal. of 15% Cool power I got for $23.99.
At one time I could buy 15% for less than $18 a gal and I thought that was high!!! It's more than double in price. :(
Kelsey,
Tower is at $43.16 when buying Quart bottles, sure is making Gas look cheaper!

Does anybody know why this has happened so abruptly?

I was looking into and found an article from the full size dragsters. They buy it by the barrel (42 gallons) and the price increase was I believe around $400, $1200 to $1600. They were saying a lot of the nitro comes from China produced by small factories. The article went on to say they were not following the environmental rules were shut down by the government. So a shortage. It also said there is a 10% tariff on it. This is just what I saw in the article, sounds reasonable. Also sounds like a good reason to go to gas engines.

I always mark my fuel jugs when I buy them and tonight I found one almost empty but it was bought in December of 2015 for $18.89. Shows you where the prices have increased.....
